Deck Maintenance 101: Preparing Your Outdoor Space for Saskatchewan Winters

The Annual Deck Inspection

Every spring and fall, take 15 minutes to walk your deck and look for:

• Loose Boards: Check for "popping" nails or screws. These aren't just trip hazards; they allow moisture to enter the joists below, leading to structural rot.
• Rot: Use a screwdriver to gently poke any dark or soft spots, especially where boards meet or near the ground. If it sinks in easily, you have rot that needs to be addressed before it spreads.
• Structural Integrity: Check the "ledger board" (where the deck meets the house) to ensure it's still tight and the flashing is intact to prevent water from entering your home's rim joist.

Cleaning & Sealing

For wood decks, a high-quality sealer is your best defense. We recommend cleaning the deck thoroughly with a specialized deck wash (avoid high-pressure washing which can damage wood fibers) and applying a UV-resistant sealer every 2-3 years. In our intense summer sun, UV protection is just as important as water protection.

Winter Prep

Before the snow flies, clear all leaves and debris from between the deck boards. Trapped organic matter holds moisture against the wood all winter, which is a recipe for rot. Also, try to use a plastic shovel instead of metal to avoid scratching your finish when clearing snow. If you have a composite deck, check the manufacturer's recommendations for ice-melt products.
