The Homeowner's Essential Repair Checklist for 2026

Being a homeowner means having a never-ending to-do list. While some jobs are big, most are small tasks that, if ignored, turn into expensive headaches. Here is the essential 2026 repair checklist for Saskatoon homes.
Interior Maintenance
- Door Adjustments: As houses settle with the seasons, doors often start to stick or rub. Usually, a longer screw in the top hinge or a slight adjustment to the strike plate is all it takes to restore smooth operation.
- Filter Changes: Your furnace works overtime in Saskatchewan. Change your filters every 3 months (or more often if you have pets) to keep your air clean and your furnace running efficiently, preventing premature blower motor failure.
- Smoke/CO Detectors: Test them monthly and replace the units every 10 years. In 2026, we recommend dual-sensor units for better protection.
- Caulking: Check the seals around bathtubs, showers, and kitchen backsplashes. Cracked caulk is the leading cause of hidden water damage in walls.
Exterior Maintenance
- Gutter Cleaning: Clogged gutters lead to ice dams in winter and basement leaks in summer. Ensure water is flowing freely and downspouts are directing water at least 6 feet away from your foundation.
- Weatherstripping: Check the seals around exterior windows and doors. Replacing worn weatherstripping can save you up to 15% on your heating and cooling bills.
- Grading: Ensure the ground around your foundation slopes away from the house (at least 1 inch per foot for the first 6 feet). This is the #1 way to prevent a wet basement in Saskatoon's spring melt.
The "Handyman" List
Keep a running list of the small stuff: that loose cabinet handle, the flickering light fixture, the hole in the screen door, or the piece of trim that never got finished. Tackling these 5-10 at a time is much more efficient and cost-effective than calling for each one individually.
