LVP vs. Laminate: Which is Best for Your 2026 Home Renovation? — CMB Handyman Services home improvement tips for Saskatoon homeowners

When it comes to durable, wood-look flooring, Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) and Laminate are the two heavy hitters. While they might look similar on the surface, their construction and performance characteristics are quite different.

    Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)

LVP is made primarily of PVC and is 100% waterproof. This makes it the undisputed winner for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. It's also generally softer underfoot and quieter than laminate.

    • Pros: Waterproof, durable, easy to clean, great for any room.
    • Cons: Can be susceptible to denting from very heavy furniture; requires a very flat subfloor.

    Modern Laminate

Laminate has come a long way. In 2026, many high-end laminates are "water-resistant" for up to 72 hours. Laminate is made of high-density fiberboard (HDF) and is generally more scratch-resistant than LVP, making it a great choice for homes with large pets.

    • Pros: Excellent scratch resistance, often more affordable, very realistic wood feel.
    • Cons: Not 100% waterproof; can be damaged by prolonged standing water; can sound "hollow" if not installed with high-quality underlayment.

    The Verdict

If you're doing a basement or a bathroom, go with LVP. If you're doing a main-floor living area with high traffic and pets, Laminate might be the better value. At CMB Handyman Services, we can help you evaluate your subfloor and lifestyle to recommend the perfect product.
